  1. Hello,

If everything goes right, i will be studying in Luton by the end of September and I was looking on the Internet about Luton life, and all I saw was people saying it´s a really bad place to go because it´s very dirty and there are a lot of crimes all over the town and I´m wondering what´s your opinion about the Life in Luton because it have to be some positive things about the life in Luton, right?

    Thank you very much.

    • Hi Goncalo,

Thanks for taking time to look around our blog about things we like in Luton. We moved here from London a few years ago (and I’ve been in several towns in Germany before), and really enjoy living in the area.

Some of the negative things that you read about the town are true, some are exaggerated and some are simply lies.

As a student, you are likely to want different things from your stay here in comparison to, say, a family, so we will concentrate on those.

Most university courses, accommodation and facilities are in the centre of town, where you will also find that all of your basic needs are catered for in the shopping area in The Mall and on George Street, e.g. small supermarkets and department stores, banks, clothes shops.

You say you’re worried about safety. We’ve lived in central and suburban London before, and find that the feel is not different. We checked statistics a couple of years ago and High Town, where we live now, actually turned out to have half the crime rate of Clerkenwell – a desirable part of central London (where I used to live). Perception is not reality.

You have to dig to find a cultural scene here in Luton, but some pointers would be Luton International Carnival, the Made in Luton website, the Hat Factory arts venue, and one or two good, traditional pubs. However, you have the cultural riches of London 23 minutes away by train, attractive parks and open spaces close to the town centre, and you are surrounded by Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire countryside.

We hope this is useful and that all goes well with your studies. Feel free to contact us again, should you need to.
